Just think of it. A cast on each arm incorporating the thumbs going all the way up the arm. A minerva cast that includes the head and neck and the upper shoulders then including the arms up the arms to the minerva across the back of the upper shoulders and being a part of ta cast that keeps you from moving your head, your lower jaw, the neck and the arms totally. It would make a person totally helpless, unable to move from the middle of your back to the top of your head. You would be unable to scratch your nose or move your hands and wrists and arms. Someone would have to feed you help with going to the bathroom and everything else.
Well here I find myself in long arm thumb spica on the right side. It happened a few weeks back when i fell down the stairs at home. The wife saw me do it and I grabbed my arm in pain(supposedly). ?I managed to work it into a broken scaphoid which requires such cast for up to 12 weeks! Have had 3 lovely casts so far and will change it again on the 16th. Trying to decide if I want to continue the LATS or am I ready for a short arm ts. I have 4 rolls each of 2" and 3"black fibreglass, enough for 2 more LATS OR 1LATS and 2SATS. Decisions decisions I am having so much fun in my long term cast, don't want it to end.
Well it is now the 5th of May and still have the right arm LATS. Being able to remove and replace the cast at will helps, particularly if it becomes uncomfortable. And it has, I must keep up the image with the SO but cannot wear when I have a DRs appt. So I remove for the appt and replace when I get home. It has been on for a total of 7 weeks and 2 days, when it has been off for a maximum of 4or 5 hours, I could not wait to be recasted. The cast has been on long enough that it is a part of me, I am able to do most everything despite I am right handed. Just have the wife sign all the checks. I know my casting adventure will end in a few weeks but this has absolutely been the best casting adventure I have ever done. Just this afternoon I again replaced the cast because of some sore spots. If you are applying and wearing the cast, You soon learn the proper way to wrap and where to pad the cast. I believe all cast technicians should have to wear one of their creations full term, so they would experience all the nuances of being immobilized. This will be the last one for me for a while the wife will get suspicious. It has been about 7or 8 years since my last "medical" casting adventure. My right arm is definately atrophied and smaller than the left. I will have to rehab it myself, and also treat it for adema, which is always a problem when casted for a long periods. I am in casting heaven!!!
This will be the last long arm cast I will apply. The next will be a SATS, and I could possibly keep those for up to another 5 weeks! SATS are easier to apply and easier to wear. That would give me the opportunity to rehab the elbow. Don't forget there was nothing wrong with the arm, just found a bone I could claim broken and would give me a long arm thumb spica cast for 10 to 12 weeks. This is standard medical procedure for a broken scaphoid bone. Would like to hear from some of you readers on my experience and your views on my journey.
Well 10 days later and decided I needed "more healing time" The arm feels so much better casted than not but i know it HAS to end in 2 more weeks. The trouble is the casts I am building look so real and professional. Not afraid to go to the hospital or clinic with it on. Have been wearing this right side LATS for 7 weeks now. Should not go past 9 will have too much trouble rehabing it. I still have some work to do this summer. In 2 weeks I have enough supplies to build 2 SATS that should take me to 11 weeks or up to 13 weeks casted if I want to. Thats what is nice about a scaphoid fracture, you could stretch it up to 6 months if you want to. LOVE MY LATS CAST!
Well here it is the first part of May and I have figured out how to get another full term cast. From the injury described earlier I have managed to convince the SO they missed another broken bone in my right arm. I have an appt with a hand specialist to look at my wrist, but he will probably only give me a splint or brace to wear. That's when I go into action. I will build a long arm cast, first out of white then I have some black to change it after a couple of weeks. I can see a joyful casting adventure coming my way only bad thing is it will be in the summer when I have my appt and are able to apply the cast. But I foresee a two month long casting saga. Will come back and describe how it's going.
Well here again in a self applied LAC. The first 2 weeks were nearly unbearable because I did not get it comfortable when I built it. I built this one a week ago tuesday and with a considerable amount of grinding and cutting pieces off, I have finally gotten a cast that feels very comfortable. I had forgotten a few places needing padding during construction. I have anywhere between 5 to 8 weeks to keep if I want to. I am almost 60 yo so i can always claim slow growing due to age. The cast right now is very soft and comforting and enjoying every minute of the latest casting adventure!

So now I have been able to transform my LAC int a LATS. Claiming the dr wanted control of the wrist by casting the thumb as well. This time I will keep for another 2 weeks an if up to it, I could keep for 2 more. I love the look of casts and love the feel of them, only wish I could make them for a few days instead of weeks/months. Come on out there, I know there are lots of casters out there, so POST!
